1. Overview

Knit fabric mills take yarn and loop it into fabric — the stretchy, comfortable cloth in T-shirts, athletic wear, swimwear, underwear, mattress covers, medical bandages, and car-seat upholstery. Unlike woven cloth (think a dress shirt or denim), knit fabric is made by interlocking loops, which is why it stretches and drapes. This industry covers the mills that knit that fabric — and, in many cases, also dye and finish it — but not the factories that sew it into clothing.[1]

5. How the money works
