NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) 2022 code 32799 — United States. A rollup of four child industries: Cut Stone & Stone Products (327991), Ground or Treated Mineral & Earth (327992), Mineral Wool (327993), and All Other Miscellaneous Nonmetallic Mineral Products (327999).
1. Overview
This is not one industry — it is the federal statistical bin for the nonmetallic-mineral products that don't fit any of the sector's named categories (cement, concrete, glass, lime, gypsum, clay, ceramics, abrasives). What lands here is a grab-bag: the granite and engineered-quartz on kitchen countertops; the ground limestone, talc, barite, diatomite, and perlite powders inside paint, plastics, drilling mud, cat litter, and beer filters; the mineral-wool and fiberglass insulation in walls and around pipes; and a residual tail of stucco, dry-mix mortar, fracking proppants, and plaster statuary [1][3][4][5][6].
For an investor, the useful way to read 32799 is as four separate businesses under one roof that happen to share three traits — they all start with rock, they are all freight-bound (heavy, low value per pound, so markets are regional and imports are limited), and they are all dominated by private ownership, with no U.S.-listed company that is simultaneously a pure play and a leader in any of the four [3][4][5][6]. Beyond that, almost everything that matters — end-markets, growth direction, concentration, pay, and headline risk — diverges sharply across the children. The whole point of a rollup view is to see those differences side by side.
Why care: at ~$27.5 billion of manufacturing receipts [2] this is a mid-sized slice of building-and-industrial materials, but it sits at chokepoints in much larger flows — the countertop trade, the mineral-filler supply chain, the insulation market, and shale completions. The public menu is thin and mostly indirect; the private and private-equity (PE) menu is deep, and 2024–2025 was an unusually heavy deal year across the code. And one cross-cutting hazard — respirable crystalline silica dust — is reshaping one slice while leaving another almost untouched.
2. What's inside — the four children and how they differ
The children are grouped by the accident of classification, not by shared economics. The contrast is stark: one child holds 70% of the establishments but only 29% of the dollars (cut stone — thousands of tiny shops), while another holds 7% of establishments and 29% of dollars (mineral wool — a few giant plants). Revenue per establishment runs from about $3.7 million (cut stone) to $35 million (mineral wool) — nearly a 10x spread within the same five-digit code [2][3][5].

CR4 = combined revenue share of the four largest firms; HHI = Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, a standard concentration gauge (higher = more concentrated). The 327999 HHI is suppressed by Census, so we do not state a value [6]. Firm counts also differ wildly by child: cut stone alone reports 2,203 firms, against 148 in ground minerals, 145 in mineral wool, and 269 in the miscellaneous bin [3][4][5][6].

Three structural readings jump out:
- Fragmentation is not uniform — it is a spectrum. Cut stone (327991) is one of the most atomized manufacturing industries in the entire federal dataset (HHI 52, and no company holding more than about 5% of the countertop-manufacturing market); mineral wool (327993) is a professionalized oligopoly (HHI 1,106) protected by furnace capital costs and permitting. The other two sit in between. Any statement about "how consolidated this industry is" is meaningless at the level — you must name the child [3][5].
- The businesses run on different cycles. Cut stone and the construction-materials half of 327999 ride housing and remodeling; ground minerals adds autos, packaging, paper, and filtration; mineral wool adds a code-driven structural growth ratchet; and both 327992 (barite) and 327999 (proppants) carry an oil-and-gas drilling cycle that has nothing to do with the others [3][4][5][6].
- Pay inverts the intuition about labor intensity. The most labor-heavy child pays the least: cut stone averages about $57,900 a worker, versus roughly $85,000 in ground minerals — a capital-intensive, low-headcount process business — with mineral wool (~$73,000, skilled furnace operators) and the miscellaneous bin (~$71,700) in between [3][4][5][6]. The level average of ~$67,000 is simply cut stone's 35,000 low-paid workers dragging down 37,000 better-paid plant workers.
3. How big it is (the rollup, and why the total understates the real economy)

Derived averages: roughly 24 workers per establishment, ~$67,000 of average pay per worker, and about $10 million of receipts per firm [1][2] — but those level-wide averages are close to meaningless because they blend $3.7-million labor-heavy stone shops with $35-million capital-heavy insulation plants (Section 2).
The concentration paradox — read this before trusting the level HHI. The level looks highly competitive (HHI 172, CR4 21%), yet three of the four children are meaningfully more concentrated than that, and one (mineral wool) is a tight oligopoly. The CR50 comparison makes the point cleanly: at the level, the fifty largest firms hold 60.7% of receipts [2], but within the children that figure runs from 32.3% in cut stone to 89.2% in the miscellaneous bin, 92.7% in ground minerals, and 97.6% in mineral wool [3][4][5][6]. Why the mismatch? Because the four largest firms in the whole code are not the same four firms in any one product market — a mineral-wool giant does not compete with a countertop fabricator. Aggregating four unrelated markets dilutes measured concentration and hides real pricing power. Worse, even the child-level numbers understate it: markets here are regional freight radii and specific mineral grades, so in a given product and delivery zone the effective competitor count can be two or three [4]. The honest reading: 32799's HHI of 172 is an artifact of lumping separate markets together, not evidence of a competitive industry [2][3][4][5][6].
Undercount and boundary caveats — the $27.5 billion is narrower than it sounds.
- Federal employer statistics omit nonemployer (self-employed) businesses. This bites hardest in cut stone (327991) — thousands of one-person fabricators and monument dealers — and in the artisan tail of 327999 (plaster/statuary, custom synthetic gems, small mica shops). Because dollars are dominated by larger plants, it affects the firm count far more than the $27.5 billion [3][6]. The other two children are essentially fully captured: mineral wool and ground minerals are genuine plant-scale manufacturing, not trades [4][5].
- The mining tonnage sits in a different code. Quarrying dimension stone (NAICS 212311), mining industrial/frac sand (212322), and mining the raw minerals that feed the grinders (2123) are all classified as mining, not manufacturing — so 32799 captures only the processing/fabrication value-add, not the material underneath it [3][4][6]. This is most distorting in 327999: raw frac sand is roughly 80%+ of all proppant tonnage and none of it is counted here, so the code's $5.2 billion is emphatically not the size of the proppant business [6].
- Some competing products are classified elsewhere. Precipitated calcium carbonate (a chemical, NAICS 325180) competes head-to-head with the ground carbonate counted here, which is why the flagship U.S. listed name is only partly "in" the code [4]. Foam plastic insulation (326140/326150) — mineral wool's main substitute — is likewise outside [5]. And most of the countertop economy is imported slab fabricated in U.S. shops: U.S. net import reliance on dimension stone runs about 85% of apparent consumption by value, with Brazil at 21%, Italy 19%, China 17%, and India 16% of import value; domestic quarrying is only ~2.3 million tons worth ~$460 million [3][13].
- Third-party "market" numbers cut both ways — check the scope before comparing. Some run smaller than the federal figure: private research valuing the "U.S. mineral wool insulation market" at roughly $2.7 billion is usually counting rock/slag wool only, while Census's $7.92 billion for 327993 folds fiberglass in as well [5]. Others run far larger: the Natural Stone Institute's dimension-stone ecosystem of 9,689 firms, 85,966 employees, and $3.153 billion of payroll spans quarrying, fabrication, wholesale, and installation across several NAICS codes, and "countertop market" estimates that include imported slab, distribution, and installation run to tens of billions [3].
Net: treat $27.5 billion as U.S. manufacturing value-add sitting at the center of much larger flows of mined rock, imported slab, and downstream construction spend.
4. The investable universe — where value concentrates across the children
The single most important fact for a public-market investor still holds: there is no U.S.-listed company that is both a pure play and the leader in any of the 32799 children. Value concentrates in private companies, PE portfolios, and the divisions of diversified multinationals. But this pass forces one correction to the old parent view — ground minerals does now have a genuine listed near-pure-play, and the mineral-wool theme has a whole downstream layer worth naming. (Tickers, revenues, and margins are reserved for this section and Section 10.)
Where the listed money actually is, by child:
- Mineral wool (327993) — the cleanest listed theme. Owens Corning (NYSE: OC) is the largest U.S. insulation maker: its Insulation segment did $3.7B of sales and $848M of EBITDA (a 23% margin) in 2025, spanning fiberglass (PINK), stone wool (Thermafiber), and foam — about one-third of a company that also does roofing and doors [5]. Rockwool A/S (Nasdaq Copenhagen: ROCK-B) is the closest thing to a listed pure-play — €3.88B group revenue, a 21.3% Insulation-segment EBITDA margin in 2025, and €737M of North American revenue from four NA plants and nearly 1,100 regional employees — but foreign-listed [5]. Saint-Gobain (owns CertainTeed) and Berkshire Hathaway (owns Johns Manville: 44 plants, 8,000 employees) hold big positions diluted inside huge parents; Knauf (which bought USG in 2019) is private [5]. Two names sit one layer downstream and are newly worth naming: TopBuild (NYSE: BLD), with $4.3B of 2025 insulation-and-accessories revenue across 200+ installation branches and 250+ distribution centers, and Installed Building Products (NYSE: IBP), with roughly 250 branches — insulation-demand exposure without furnace and energy risk [5]. Armstrong World Industries (NYSE: AWI, ~$1.6B sales, mineral-fiber ceilings ~74% of sales) is adjacent: it consumes mineral wool rather than selling insulation [5].
- Ground/treated mineral (327992) — now two listed names, not one. Minerals Technologies (NYSE: MTX) is the largest U.S.-listed diversified play at ~$2.07B of 2025 revenue, a 25.0% production margin, and segment operating margins of 11.3% (Consumer & Specialties) and 17.4% (Engineered Solutions) — though much of its revenue is precipitated calcium carbonate (a chemicals code) and it carries a talc-litigation overhang [4]. Oil-Dri Corporation (NYSE: ODC) is the closest U.S.-listed pure-play: ~$486M of FY2025 revenue at a 29.5% gross margin from sorbent clays for cat litter, industrial absorbents, agricultural carriers, edible-oil filtration, and renewable-diesel pretreatment — though an acquired silica-gel business and international operations make even this an imperfect proxy [4]. Imerys (Euronext Paris: NK) is the European global leader. U.S. Silica was taken private by Apollo funds for ~$1.85 billion ($15.50/share) in July 2024 — no longer investable publicly [4].
- Cut stone (327991) — thin and troubled. Caesarstone (Nasdaq: CSTE) is the closest listed pure-play but a shrinking, asset-light turnaround: revenue fell to ~$397M in 2025 from ~$443M in 2024 and ~$565M in 2023, with gross margin compressing to 18.4% from 21.8% [3]. Matthews International (Nasdaq: MATW) gives partial exposure through its Memorialization segment (~$810M of sales, ~$170M adjusted EBITDA in fiscal 2025) [3]. Foreign-listed quartz makers LX Hausys (Korea) and Vicostone (Vietnam) offer real operating exposure with access and disclosure frictions. The best operators — Cambria, Cosentino, MS International, Wilsonart, Coldspring — are private, and Polycor, North America's largest natural dimension-stone quarrier-fabricator (~1,300 employees, 50+ quarries, 20 plants), was bought by Birch Hill Equity Partners and Investissement Québec in April 2022 [3].
- Miscellaneous (327999) — really a shale-sand bet plus a private packaged-concrete world. Atlas Energy Solutions (NYSE: AESI, ~$1.06B FY2024 revenue) and Smart Sand (Nasdaq: SND, ~$311M FY2024 revenue, ~$210M market cap) are primarily frac-sand miners; only their engineered/resin-coated proppant sits squarely in this code, and you own them for an oil-completions view [6]. The construction-materials value is embedded in Sika, Saint-Gobain, RPM International (Dryvit), and CRH — whose Americas Building Solutions segment, which includes packaged products and owns Sakrete, reported $7.122B of 2025 revenue at a 20.7% adjusted EBITDA margin — or held privately, most notably by QUIKRETE (~250 facilities), which bought Summit Materials at an enterprise value of ~$11.5 billion in February 2025 [6].
One boundary the children genuinely split on. Engineered quartz is claimed by two of them: 327991's scope explicitly spans "engineered/agglomerated quartz slabs" competing for the same countertop dollar as natural stone, while Census also lists "synthetic stones" under 327999 — and both child primers accordingly name Caesarstone and Cambria as their engineered-stone exposure [3][6]. So do not double-count: engineered-stone revenue and the silica-regulation risk attached to it cannot be cleanly assigned to a single child, and any "engineered stone" figure needs to be read against which code the source had in mind.
The through-line: to own 32799 through public markets you buy either a diversified building-products/specialty-chemicals compounder (OC, Saint-Gobain, Sika, RPM, CRH, MTX) where the code is a slice, a foreign-listed leader (Rockwool, Imerys), a downstream demand proxy (BLD, IBP), or a single small or stressed name (ODC, CSTE, MATW, AESI, SND). The pure, clean, U.S.-listed leader does not exist.
5. How the money works
Despite the different end-markets, the owner's economics rhyme across all four children, with two shared laws and one dividing line.
Shared law #1 — freight is destiny. Every child makes a heavy product with low value per pound, so shipping can cost as much as the product. That forces plants to sit either on top of the raw material or next to the customer, makes pricing regional ("delivered cost" competition), limits import penetration, and hands incumbents a geographic moat rather than a patent one [3][4][5][6]. The children illustrate the same law at four different scales: shipping a $100–$200/tonne mineral powder more than a few hundred miles can double its delivered cost [4]; mineral wool is "mostly air," which caps the economic delivery radius at a few hundred miles and is why Rockwool and Knauf build U.S. plants instead of exporting [5]; bagged dry mix travels farther than ready-mix but still needs a network of regional plants [6]; and proppant winners now compete on last-mile logistics to the wellsite after operators abandoned long-hauled Northern White sand for cheap local Permian sand [6]. The extreme solution is Minerals Technologies' satellite PCC model — build the mineral plant inside the customer's paper mill on a ~10-year requirements contract and eliminate transport entirely [4].
Shared law #2 — capacity utilization and energy set the margin. For the three plant-scale children (327992, 327993, 327999), fixed costs are high — furnaces, kilns, mills, grinders run continuously — so the swing factors are utilization and energy [4][5][6]. Mineral wool is the clearest case: the Energy Information Administration puts the industry at 3,239 million Btu per employee and 11.2 thousand Btu per dollar of value added, a single new stone-wool plant costs $150–175 million or more, and Owens Corning's 2025 arithmetic shows how fast it turns — roughly 5% lower volume, $50 million of production-downtime cost and $42 million of input inflation against only $27 million of price and $30 million of manufacturing improvement [5]. The proppant history is harsher still: CARBO's base ceramic proppant fell from about 80% of company revenue in 2014 to about 30% by 2017 as customers substituted cheap untreated sand, while its kilns and dryers kept absorbing cost [6]. A demand air-pocket that idles an expensive furnace is the classic way margin evaporates.
The dividing line — labor-shop vs. capital-plant. Cut stone (327991) breaks the mold: at the fabrication-shop level it is labor-heavy and low-capital — a bridge saw, CNC (computer-numerical-control) machine or waterjet, skilled crews, and thin per-job margins made on the spread between slab cost and installed price, where a single cracked slab or bad template can erase the profit on several routine jobs [3]. That is why it has 2,163 tiny establishments averaging about 16 workers and payroll near a quarter of receipts, while mineral wool concentrates the same revenue in 224 capital-intensive plants [3][5].
The margin ladder across the level. Read it with care — gross, production, operating, and EBITDA margins are not comparable — but the ordering is informative. Capital-plant businesses clear high-teens-to-mid-20s: Owens Corning's insulation EBITDA margin ~23% and Rockwool's ~21.3%; CRH's Americas Building Solutions adjusted EBITDA margin 20.7%; Minerals Technologies' 25.0% production margin (11.3%–17.4% at the segment operating line); Oil-Dri's 29.5% gross margin [4][5][6]. The child whose economics are set at the fabrication bench is the laggard: Caesarstone is fighting to hold an 18.4% gross margin [3].
Where the pricing power hides. Two mechanisms recur:
- The value ladder in minerals (327992). The same rock sells across a wide price range depending on fineness, brightness, and whether it is surface-coated; ultrafine and coated grades — which let a customer cut costly titanium-dioxide (TiO₂) pigment — earn far more than bulk filler. Diatomite is the cleanest illustration: from roughly $10 per metric ton as lightweight aggregate to more than $1,000 per metric ton in specialty applications [4][13].
- Brand, spec, and code approval (327993, and branded slab in 327991). Insulation and branded quartz are spec-driven and code-approved, so makers hold pricing power in inflation and can push premium mix (fire-rated stone wool, faced board, designer quartz) [3][5]. Façade and dry-mix suppliers are pushing the same way, selling complete warranted assemblies rather than an undifferentiated bag of material [6].
Cyclicality differs by child — but the seasonal shape does not. Construction and remodeling drive cut stone and the construction half of 327999; add autos/packaging/paper/filtration for ground minerals; a code-driven growth ratchet for mineral wool; and an oil-and-gas drilling cycle for barite — more than 90% of which goes into drilling mud — and proppants, the most rig-count-sensitive demand in the whole code [4][6]. Notably, two children independently report the same seasonality: Caesarstone and Owens Corning both describe stronger second and third calendar quarters and weaker first and fourth, with Owens Corning adding that residential insulation demand follows housing starts with about a three-month lag [3][5]. The one genuinely non-cyclical pocket is monument/memorial demand in cut stone, which tracks deaths — though it is structurally flat-to-declining as cremation rises [3].
6. What drives demand
Because the children serve different end-markets, the level's demand is a bundle of loosely correlated drivers rather than a single cycle:
- Housing turnover and repair-and-remodel (R&R) — the biggest shared driver: kitchen/bath remodels (countertops), stucco and dry-mix (walls), and reinsulation. Residential uses are roughly 70%+ of countertop demand, and Caesarstone attributes 60%–70% of its U.S., Australian, and Canadian revenue to renovation and remodeling versus 30%–40% from new residential construction [3]. Rate-sensitive and discretionary [3][6].
- New construction (residential and non-residential) — starts feed countertops, cladding, insulation, stucco, and dry-mix mortar [3][5][6].
- Building-energy and fire-safety codes — the structural tailwind unique to mineral wool: each tightening of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) or California Title 24 raises required insulation per building, and fire codes steer specifiers toward noncombustible stone wool. Adoption is state-by-state, so the ratchet is uneven rather than uniform [5].
- Decarbonization and the retrofit runway — the Department of Energy puts opaque building envelopes at 28% of building energy use (equal to 11% of U.S. primary energy) and expects nearly 93% of today's residential and 60% of commercial buildings still to exist in 2050 — a long insulation-retrofit runway independent of new starts [5]. On the construction-materials side, the Federal Highway Administration's low-carbon materials program provides up to $2 billion (including $1.2 billion through state DOTs), pulling dry-mix makers toward lower-clinker formulations and environmental product declarations [6].
- Industrial end-markets for minerals — paint/coatings, plastics/rubber, paper/packaging, and filtration pull carbonate, talc, silica, and diatomite. U.S. talc end-uses run 36% plastics, 19% paint, 17% ceramics, 12% paper, 8% roofing; filtration is about 60% of diatomite use; a standing tailwind is TiO₂ extension (minerals replacing costly pigment) [4][13].
- Oil-and-gas drilling — barite weighting agent (327992) and engineered proppants (327999) rise and fall with rig counts, completion cadence, and crude prices [4][6].
- Data centers — now visible in two children: a fast-growing outlet for insulation needing thermal, acoustic, and fire protection at once, and, per Sika, the bright spot in 2025 U.S. construction-chemicals demand while commercial building softened [5][6].
- Horticulture and controlled-environment agriculture — another newly shared thread: perlite and vermiculite as growing media (15% of expanded perlite use) alongside stone-wool substrate cubes and slabs [4][5][13].
- Purification and environmental applications — bleaching clay for edible-oil and renewable-diesel pretreatment, bentonite liners, remediation, and water treatment: credible secular growth pockets, though the renewable-diesel piece carries government-incentive risk [4].
- Design/fashion cycles and demand-destroying regulation — countertop taste shifts (quartz vs. granite vs. porcelain/sintered), and, unusually, policy is now actively shrinking engineered-stone demand in some markets (Section 7) [3][6].
- Deaths — a small, stable driver for the monument niche, softened by rising cremation [3].
7. Regulation
The dominant regulatory theme cuts across the code but hits the children unevenly.
Respirable crystalline silica — the defining hazard for three of the four children. Cutting or grinding stone and minerals releases fine silica dust that causes silicosis, an incurable lung disease, and lung cancer. 8. Consolidation
The direction of travel across 32799 is toward more private ownership, more private equity, and fewer public pure-plays — the opposite of most maturing industries — but the mechanism differs by child, and 2024–2025 was an unusually heavy stretch of deal activity:
- Cut stone (327991) — roll-up of the atomized. Capital cost, permitting, and freight moats block newcomers [5].
- Miscellaneous (327999) — a brutal proppant shakeout, a packaged-concrete megadeal, and European roll-up. Proppants went through bankruptcy and take-privates (Carbo Ceramics to Wilks Brothers, 2020; Hi-Crush into Atlas for $450M, 2024; U.S. Silica to Apollo, 2024). Packaged concrete consolidated hard: QUIKRETE closed its acquisition of Summit Materials at an enterprise value of ~$11.5 billion on February 10, 2025. And construction chemicals rolled up into European majors — Sika's ~$5.9 billion purchase of the former BASF construction-chemicals business (MBCC) on top of Parex, whose CHF 1.2 billion of annual sales doubled Sika's mortar business to CHF 2.3 billion [6].
A cross-cutting reading: the same buyers keep appearing in more than one child. Apollo's U.S. Silica spans both the ground-minerals and proppant narratives; Saint-Gobain shows up in mineral wool and in ceramic-proppant history; Imerys appears in specialty minerals and as a ceramic-proppant competitor [4][5][6]. Ownership consolidates faster than the statistical code suggests, because the acquirers do not respect the code's boundaries.
9. Risks
- Silica regulation and litigation (biggest single swing factor). A spreading engineered-stone ban would gut the highest-growth product line in cut stone and 327999, trigger liability, and force a scramble to natural stone, porcelain, or low-silica formulations; talc-asbestos suits remain a bankruptcy-scale risk in ground minerals, with a fresh $215 million provision booked in 2025 [3][4][6][7][9].
- Housing-cycle and interest-rate sensitivity. R&R, home turnover, and new construction gate demand for cut stone, stucco, and insulation; a high-rate, low-transaction market depresses the largest shared driver [3][5][6].

10. How to invest, and the outlook
Public-market routes (limited, indirect, and clustered in mineral wool and ground minerals):
- Mineral wool is the cleanest listed theme: Owens Corning (NYSE: OC) for the most liquid, diversified U.S. exposure (insulation ~$3.7B of sales at a 23% EBITDA margin, about a third of the company), or Rockwool (Copenhagen: ROCK-B; OTC: RKWBF/RKWCF) for the closest listed pure-play on stone wool's code-and-fire-safety tailwind. TopBuild (BLD) and Installed Building Products (IBP) offer the same demand without furnace risk; Armstrong World Industries (AWI) is adjacent through mineral-fiber ceilings [5].
- Ground minerals: Minerals Technologies (NYSE: MTX) for the largest diversified U.S.-listed position (mind the talc overhang and the PCC-in-chemicals nuance), and — new to this view — Oil-Dri (NYSE: ODC) as the closest thing to a U.S.-listed pure-play at ~$486M of revenue and a 29.5% gross margin; Imerys (Euronext Paris: NK) is the European leader. There is no dedicated ETF [4].
- Cut stone / miscellaneous: exposure is thin and lower-quality — Caesarstone (CSTE) is a shrinking turnaround under regulatory siege; Matthews International (MATW) gives a memorial slice; LX Hausys and Vicostone are foreign-listed quartz makers; Atlas Energy Solutions (AESI) and Smart Sand (SND) are really shale-sand bets; steadier exposure comes diluted inside Sika, Saint-Gobain, RPM International, and CRH [3][6].
- Cycle proxies: home-improvement retailers (Home Depot, Lowe's) and flooring/building-products names (Mohawk/Daltile) give indirect exposure to the shared remodeling demand [3].
Private-market routes (where most of the value and deal flow actually sit):
- Cut stone — buy and professionalize local fabrication shops; the HHI-52 structure is the textbook roll-up. Diligence belongs on builder concentration, backlog quality, slab aging and yield, callbacks, silica controls, workers'-compensation history, installer classification, and normalized maintenance capex [3].
- Ground minerals — buy a regional grinder or single-mineral processor, or back a PE roll-up (the Apollo/U.S. Silica model); diligence maps each mine and plant to its actual NAICS activity, reconciles tons mined to salable yield, separates commodity from specialty grades, and allocates reclamation, silica, and talc liabilities by site [4].
- Mineral wool — direct plant, joint-venture, or greenfield investment (the Rockwool/Knauf model), plus the horticulture growing-media niche and the more accessible layer of regional installation, specialty distribution, mechanical-insulation fabrication, fire-stopping, and energy-retrofit contracting [5].
- Miscellaneous — cash-generative regional stucco/dry-mix platforms (freight-protected local near-monopolies) and distressed proppant assets in downturns, with engineered-stone silica-liability tail risk flagged. The cardinal error is underwriting "NAICS 327999" as a market: a housing-linked stucco blender and an oil-price-sensitive ceramic kiln share a code and nothing else [6].
Near-term drivers to watch (forward-looking judgment):
- Interest rates and housing turnover — the master switch for the construction-linked majority of the code; rate relief reignites both home sales and the remodeling cycle [3][5][6].
- The silica-regulation wave — a California engineered-stone fabrication ban is the swing factor for cut stone and 327999: bearish for high-silica quartz, potentially bullish for natural stone, porcelain/sintered surfaces, and low-silica formulations — and neutral for mineral wool and most ground minerals [3][6][10].
- Building-energy and fire codes, and the retrofit runway — the durable, non-cyclical ratchet that makes mineral wool the structural growth standout, lifting insulation content per building regardless of building count; watch state-by-state IECC and Title 24 adoption, not just the model code [5].
- New capacity timing in mineral wool — Rockwool expects North American stone-wool demand to exceed capacity until 2028; the plants commissioning in 2027–2028 decide whether today's tightness converts to margin or to price competition [5].
- Energy, freight, and trade policy — the margin swing factors for the plant-scale children, plus AD/CVD continuation that keeps a thumb on the import scale for domestic slab makers [4][5][6][11].
- Data centers and low-carbon procurement — the two demand pockets now showing up in more than one child, pulling insulation and construction-chemicals volumes while housing stays soft [5][6].
Net. NAICS 32799 is best understood not as an industry to "buy" but as four freight-protected, mostly-private mineral-processing businesses reported together. The steadiest structural grower is mineral wool (codes, fire safety, retrofit, data centers); the most defensive is ground minerals (picks-and-shovels with a specialty-value ladder and, at last, a listed near-pure-play); the most fragmented and roll-up-friendly is cut stone; and the most cyclical and top-heavy is the miscellaneous bin (proppants plus construction chemicals, now with a $11.5-billion packaged-concrete consolidator sitting on top).
